This is a tragically neglected museum, Smith County & City of Tyler should be ashamed. They should fund this fabulous Carnegie donated building of great architectural and cultural notoriety. Instead, they shirk their responsibility off to the Historical Society. It was closed, and available sparingly by appointment only. There are only 2 employees, and one off duty for an extended time makes it impossible to open to the public. My great grandfather was a County Commissioner. Sad. He would be ashamed to be a Commissioner now. Drive down the road to Marshall, a city of 1/4 the size, and see one of Texas' finest small town museums.

Another gem of East Texas possessing a quality museum of history of Tyler's early days. The building itself merits study, a Carnegie Library with Italian Renaissance styling.
